Recently, a Japanese scientist discovered, quite unexpectedly, that bathing human stem cells in a weak bath of acid reduces them back into an even more infantile state. They can then be purposely nurtured for needy patients by growing them, for example, a new head if theirs accidentally falls off – without any fear of rejection from the body, which is the important bit. This is great news for anybody currently employed in King Henry VIII’s court, but for everyone else it means that scientists will be able to confidently grow new organs for alcoholics who have ruined their livers by drinking too much. Or alternatively, replace parts of the body affected by birth defects. Continue reading
